Rambert history (1926-2002)

• Marie Rambert was the founder of the Rambert Dance Company
• She was inspired by performances from famous ballerinas and choreographers (1904)

1912 - acquired her love for classical ballet

1914 - the outbreak of WW1 Marie moved to London

1921 - opened a dance school called Ballet Ramber

1923 - invited Fredrick Ashton to train with her

1926 - Ashton created 'a tragedy of fashion'

1920-40 - Marie Rambert created the ballet club which performed regularly

1935 - first performance as Ballet Rambert 

1946 - outgrew old theatre so, therefore, moved into Sadler's Wells Theatre

1939-45 - during WW2 Ballet Rambert did several performances to entertain people

1945-62 - postwar audiences wanted longer performances1958 - Norman Morrice became resident choreographer

1966-2002 - Morrice implemented the collaboration between design and dancer

1962 - Norman Morrice travelled to America to see new developments of dance

1962 - Norman Morrice discovered Martha Graham and her unique technique

1962 - Norman Morrice returned to England and encouraged Marie Rambert to let dancers choreograph their own works

1962 - the company changed from a large touring company to 16-20 dancers

1966 - Morrice became Artistic director

1966 - the dancers were now trained in both classical ballet and contemporary (Graham technique)

1967 - Glen Tetley came over from America and was very popular in Britain

1967 - Due to his popularity Rambert did a whole Tetley season showcasing his choreographed dances

1960 - During this time the dancers had regular choreographic workshops and this is when Christopher Bruce started to emerge as a promising dancer and choreographer

1974 - Norman Morrice resigned as artistic director

1970-80 - Ballet Rambert focused on, Robert North, Christopher Bruce and Richard Alston 

1980 - Marie Rambert died and Robert North became artistic director

1980 - Christopher Bruce became associate director and choreographer

1981-86 - Robert North directed the company and was keen to develop the physicality, musicality and dramatic quality of dancers

1980 - Richard Alston became resident choreographer

1986 - Richard Alston became Artistic Director implementing the Cunningham technique

1987 - the name of the company changed to Rambert Dance Company

1992 - Richard Alston left Rambert

2002 - Christopher Bruce served as artistic director
