Diet and Heart Disease

Heart Disease is caused when there is not enough blood flow to the heart.

You increase your risk of getting heart disease if:

  • You have a high level of saturated fats in your diet, which builds up cholesterol in your arteries.
  • You have a high level of salt in your diet.

Reduced blood flow can make blood clots (or thrombosis) more likely.

Protein Intake

Proteins are essential for growth and it is important to eat the correct amount.

The estimated daily requirement (EAR) can be calculated by using this.

EAR (in g) = 0.6 x Body Mass (in KG)

Low Protein intake causes a disease called kwashiorkor.

First Class Proteins: are from meat and fish, they contain the essential animo acids.

Second Class Proteins: are from plants, they do not contain the essential animo acids.

BMI

To work out if someone is underweight or overweight, calculate their BMI:

BMI = Mass (in kg) ÷ (Height in m)2

Some people become very ill because they eat less than they need to. They may do this because:

- Poor self-esteem/confidence,

-Poor self-image,

-A desire for perfection.
