It can be a metaphor for God , The people around him - Macbeth had dark desires before meeting Lady Macbeth - These thoughts are deep with him they are stuck in him - It shows us the power of the supernatural how the catalyst for Macbeth's change in character was meeting the witches.

He feels really guilty but as human nature goes the 1st time you commit a bad deed you feel really guilty but then you do it again and again and by the 5th or 6th time it does not feel bad anymore and thats what hppens to Macbeth - He is used to killing but only in the army for the right reason - When he kills Duncan feels guilt but then he kills Banquo does'nt feel as guilty , kills Lady Macduff doesn't feel guilt at and kills her son and doesn't feel guilty - shows Macbeth becoming more emotionless - This quote can be linked to Act 5, Scene 1 When Lady Macbeth is trying to wash the blood off her hands (Ironic)

Brief candle can be a metaphor for life - You can never catch your shadow , you are always chasing your shadow - the shadow can represent a lot of things such as power , respect, money whatever Macbeth is chasing - 1st he wanted to become King then killed Banquo because he wanted his kids to be King - if the candle is lit it will burn either you blow it out or let it burn(die naturally) Macbeth's candle is blown out by Macduff who chops his head off - Macbeth is questioning whether it was worth it
