The demographic Transition model (DTM)

Birth rate - the number of babies born per thousand of the population per year.

Death rate - the number of deaths per thousand of the population per year.

Countries go through 5 different stages of population growth.          These are shown by the Demographic Transition Model.

  1. Stage 1 - birth rate is high and fluctuating. death rate is also high and fluctuating. population growth rate is zero. population size is low and steady
  2. Stage 2 - birth rate is high and steady. death rate is rapidly falling. population growth is very high. population size is rapidly increasing.
  3. Stage 3 - birth rate is rapidly falling death rate is slowly falling. population growth rate is high. population size is increasing.
  4. Stage 4 - birth rate is low and fluctuating. death rate is also low and fluctuating.. population growth is zero. population size is high and steady.
  5. Stage 5 - birth rate is slowly falling. death rate is low and fluctuating. population growth rate is negative. population size is slowly falling.
  • Poorer, less developed countries are in the earlier stages of the DTM wheras the richer countries are in the later/higher stages of the DTM.

i love this model so much, if it helps what i found really beneficial is relating each stage to a country, this was just some friendly advice so DONT bite my head off
