Why does humanitarian intervention take place?
- Beleif in doctrine of Responsibility to protect, which was endorsed by all member states of the United Nations at the 2005 World Summit to prevent genocide, war crimes, ethnic cleansing and crimes against humanity.
- Humanitarian intervention will take place in the case of Genocide or mass human rights abuses. This was the case in Libya in 2011 for example.
- The idea of indivisible humanity, which is more a liberal idea, states that there is a common humanity which trancends borders meaning that moral responsibilities are not confined to a single state.
- Humanitarian interventions can often contribute to preserving the stability of a region. The preservation of the regional balance of power can provide neighbouring states with an incentive to support intervention. This was the case in Bosnia in 1995 as this post Yugoslavian region was in chaos following the collapse of the soviet union.
- People who are being oppressed or abused by a dictator do not possess the democratic means to remove their oppressors, making humanitarian intervention necessary.
Why does HI often not take place?
- Double standards - Often pressing moral concerns…
