OVERALL AIM: Socialism in one country
1. SOCIALISM
Stalin moved soviet FP away from revoloution and towards socialism in one country, which aimed to create a modern economic state.
Suspicious of western powers and wanted to defend itsself. [DEFENSIVE/IDEOLOGY]
2. RENEWAL OF RAPALLO 1926
Stalin believed that Britain and France were trying to create a new western alliance against the USSR so he signed a five year neutrality pact with Germany. [DEFENSIVE/SECURITY+ECONOMY/ CONSISTANT]
3. KELLOG BRIAND PACT 1928
Foreign Affairs department under Chickerin announced complete disarmament and signed Kellog Briand Pact. [DEFENSIVE/SECRUTIY]
4. LITVINOV PROTOCOL 1929
By 1929 friendly relations were established with most of her western neigbours and in 1929 the Litvinvov Portocol wa signed by the USSR and 8 other countries whereby they agreed not to resort to war in the case of disputes. [DEFENSIVE/SECURITY/CONSISTANT]
5.LEAUGUE OF NATIONS 1934
Stalins fears rekindled when Hitler came to power and joined League of nations despite Lenin previously calling it the 'robbers den.' [DEFENSIVE/ SECURITY/ CONSISTANT]
6. COLLECTIVE SECURITY 1935
Stalin ordered the cominterm to pursue a new policy of seeking to form alliances in anti-facist struggle through Collective securtiy.

7. TREATY WITH FRANCE AND CZECHOSLOVAKIA
Signed in 1935 which meant the USSR were obliged to help the Czechs if France also helped.
The USSR would still have to rely on the Red Army but the pacts did deter Germany, Poland and Japan…
