Adenauer's later years and resignation, 1957-63

Adenauer's third term in office had begun promisingly. He was elected with 50.2% of the vote and an absolute majority. Although 81 years old, he had built up a formidable reputation and was held in high regard. However, in his last 6 years of office, he was far less successful than he was in his first 2 terms.
