What is energy used for in the body?
The most common energy source is adenosine triphosphate (ATP) which is used in every cell to carry out processes such as:
- Active transport
- Movement
- Anabolic reactions
- Maintenance of body temperature
- Synthesis of new molecules (e.g. proteins and DNA)
- Muscle contraction
- Cell division
The structure of ATP
ATP is a high energy molecule which is called a phosphorylated nucleotide. It is made up of an organic nitrogenous base, adenine, a 5-carbon ribose sugar and 3 phosphate groups.
