Barriers to communication

What do we mean by a barrier to communication?
Obstacles which prevent effective communication between sender & receiver.

What are the types of barriers to communication?

1. Lack of clarity :

• When message isn’t clear, it can be misunderstood/misinterpreted.

2.Technological breakdown :
-Faulty technology causes breakdowns and websites to crash which can lead to slower communications.

3. Poor communication skills :

• Some ppl have a limited vocabulary hence message can’t be understood by others.
• When ppl are poor listeners they miss out on vital information being discussed.
• When ppl talk in anger , message can be delayed/ignored due to negative behavior.

4. Long chain of command :

• Long chain of command leads to message being altered along the way. Also it takes long time to pass through hierarchy.

5. Distractions :
-Noisy environment in a meeting can cause disruptions to effective communication.
-When ppl are under stress they may not focus on task at hand or when communication.
