An historical approach (atavistic form) 

• Atavistic form: A possible explanation for criminal behaviour, centering on the idea that offenders may represent a PRIMITIVE evolutionary stage of development . This may be shown in a range of facial and physical features 
• In other words, these criminals were less civilised and had more in common with evolutionary ancestors - so they were seen as wilder and not suited to the culture or society in the late 1800s 
• This early historical perspective for explaining offending behaviour was suggested by an crimonologist called Cesare Lombroso
