- Nervous system - A communication network that enables a multicellular organism to interact appropriately with its environment.
- 2 types of communication network:
- Hormonal - This is limited by diffusion time. Diffusion distance (delta) = sqrt(Dt), where D is the diffusion coefficient.
- Nervous - Conduction velocity of up to 100m/s
- Examples of communication networks:
- Nerve net of a hydra, in which the brain is spread evenly throughout the body.
- Earth worm, in which the sensory organs are at the front and ganglia form nerve knots at each segment.
