Composition of Blood

  • Erythrocytes = carry oxygen and some carbon dioxide (red blood cells)
  • Lymphocytes = T-types cells destroy viruses and cancer cells
  • Neutrophils = B-type cells produce antibodies
  • Monocytes = remove dead cells and bacteria
  • Platelets = triggers blood clotting
  • Plasma = 90% water and transports dissolved substances

Functions of Blood

  • Transport = Blood carries elements required for life around the body, such as: carbon dioxide, oxygen and insulin and adrenalin. The red blood cells are a disc shape to carry the maximum amount of haemoglobin
  • Temperature regulation = Our optimum temperature of 37 degrees is maintained by chemical reactions regulated by enzymes
  • Exchange of materials with body tissues
  • Preventing infection = Leucocytes, neutrophils and b-type cells detect threats or pathogens and act like antigens to destroy bacteria
  • Blood clotting = When exposed to oxygen or foreign material, platelets activate a chain reaction called coagulation

Types, structure, and functions of blood vessels

  • Arteries = Carry oxygen-rich blood away from the heart and around the body (apart from the pulmonary artery). The walls contain several layers of thick…
