CASE STUDY: REURBANISATION (MANCHESTER CBD)
Reasons for Redevelopment:
- IRA bombing of Manchester, 1996.
- Irish Republican Army.
- Forced regeneration from destruction of bombing.
- 15,000m2 of new retail area.
- 90,000 new offices.
Reviving the city centre:
- Limiting out of town/suburban developments (via planning process)
- Developing new facilities (leisure and entertainment, resturants and bars, development of 24 culture)
- Improving safety (Pedestrianisation, green areas and street furniture, landscaping, CCTV)
- Higher profile (themed events such as christmas market, market team to coordinate publicity, promoting street publicity such as street cafes)
- Improved public transport (shopper buses, tram network, transport interchanges, park and ride schemes, careful pricing in car parking to control congestion)
