Decanting- Usually an insoluble solid settles to the bottom of a liquid. Sometimes it is possible to carefully pour off the liquid, leaving the solid at the bottom. This is called decanting, but it is difficult to separate the liquid and solid completely.
The ability to separate a liquid from solids depends on the different densities of the substances.
Filtration- A better way to separate an insoluble solid is to pour the mixture onto filer paper in a filter funnel. The filter paper has many very small holes, though they are too small to see. The liquid can go through the holes in the filter, but the solid cannot and stays on the filter. The filter paper acts like a tiny sleeve.
The ability of two substances to be separated by filtration depends on the different sizes of the particles in the substances.
