Multiple Sclerosis

- Disorder that affects sensory and motor functions

- The term multiple refers to the fact that the disease attacks several sites in the central nervous system

- The disease is more common among females and usually develops between the ages of 20 and 45

- Typical motor signs are: clumsiness, weakness in the limbs, jerky movements, slurred speech

- Typical sensory symptoms include: blurred or double vision, facial pain, giddiness, numbness, tingling in the legs and feet

Cause of MS

- The disease leads to the destruction of myelin sheaths of neurones in several locations in the central nervous system

- The resulting scarred areas are called plaques and they interfere with nerve transmission

- However, the original cause of the disease is not known

- There is evidence to suggest that the disease may be a result of infection and a genetic predisposition

- It may resemble an autoimmune response where the body's immune system attacks its own tissues which in the case…
