The Teheran Conference (November 1943)
· They agreed that the Soviet Union could have a ‘sphere of influence’
· However, they disagreed about the amount that Germany should pay as reparations
· Also, Churchill and Roosevelt wanted to rebuild Germany
Teheran Conference (1943)
· Roosevelt and Stalin were close, but Churchill didn’t trust Stalin.
· The Western Allies wanted lower reparations as they remembered how detrimental the Treaty of Versailles was.
· However, Stalin wanted to punish Germany for all the damage and life that was lost in Russia
The Yalta Conference (February 1945)
· The agreed that Germany and Berlin would be divided into four zones
· They also agreed that the countries of Eastern Europe would be allowed to hold free elections to decide how they would be governed
· The USSR would join the war against Japan
· There were not many disagreements at all, except how big the sectors would be.

The Potsdam Conference (July-August 1945)
· They agreed that the Nazi Party would be banned and the frontiers of Poland
· They disagreed about reparations: Stalin wanted more in reparations than the Western Allies did. Also, Stalin had set up a Communist Government in Poland
· One tension was that the USA tested an atomic bomb without notifying Stalin.
The Potsdam Conference (July-August 1945)
- Tensions grew worse because neither Truman nor Attlee trusted Stalin
- Also, Truman had tested an atomic bomb without notifying Stalin which made him feel excluded and under attack.
Truman Doctrine (March 1947)
· The aim of the Doctrine was to contain Communism, but not push it back. This was called containment
- With the doctrine, Truman established that the United States would provide political, military and economic assistance to all democratic nations under threat.

- This made Stalin think that the USA were personally attacking Communism so worsened relations
The Marshall Plan (June 1947)
· The aim was also to contain Communism, but also to help the Economies of Europe to recover

- Stalin refused to allow Eastern European countries to receive Marshall aid, contributing to their poor living standards even further. This worsened relations.
Cominform (October 1947)
· In 1947, Stalin set up Cominform. It was an alliance of Communist Countries and a response to the Marshall Plan
· Its aim was to spread Communist ideas and remove the opposition.
