The Charge of the Light Brigade
Half a league, half a league,
Half a league onward,
Rhyme scheme sounds like horse hooves, the horses are seemingly unstoppable.
All in the valley of Death
The reader is warned from the beggining of the bad outcome, 'valley of death'
Rode the six hundred
'Forward, the Light Brigade!
Charge for the guns!' he said:
'He said' makes it seem like they didn't have a choice and they were unable to argue with the decisions being made despite the outcome.
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred
'Forward, the Light Brigade!'
They are one group, they are remembered as a collective rather than separately.
Was there a man dismay'd?
Not tho' the soldier knew
Some one had blunder'd:
The soliders know that the command was a mistake but they still follow it because it's their duty.
Theirs not to make reply,
Theirs not to reason why,
Theirs but to do and die:
Rhyme and repetition shows the soldiers obedience and sense of duty despite the certainty of their death.
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.
Cannon to the right of them,
Cannon to the left of them,
Cannon in front of them,
Repetition makes it clear that they are…
