The Falling Leaves
November 1915
Today, as I rode by,
I saw the brown leaves dropping from their tree
'Dropping' sounds fast and spontaneous, shows how the soldiers died.
In a still afternoon,
Sounds peaceful, doesn't fit with the somber tone of the poem.
When no wind whirled them whistling to the sky,
Alliteration emphasises the idea that the leaves are old and it's natural for them to fall.
But thickly, silently.
They fell like snowflakes wiping out the noon;
Emphasises the number that fell, the amount can block out the sun.
And wandered slowly thence
Shows that the poet…
