What is the difference between criminal and civil law?
Criminal law
Criminal law relates to offences and breaches of law that negatively affects society as a whole.
If a person breaches criminal law, they’re subject to criminal prosecution by the State - usually brought by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) in the name of the Crown, and trials are held in a Magistrates’ Court or the Crown Court.
Examples of criminal offences:
•Burglary, theft, arson and criminal damage •Assault and battery •Murder
