ARTS AND CRAFTS MOVEMENT;
- also known as reform movement
- most notaeble was William morris who was quite influential
- took place mid-19th century
- noticed the harsh effects of industrialisation with poor quality in products
- he vowed to reform commercial art to manufacture better designed goods
- he set up Morris and Co in 1861 where he created natural dyed fabric, hand woven rugs and wallpaper
- he also created ladderbacked chairs
- drew inspiration from flowing shapes of nature
- today stores like Liberty's still produce products influenced by Morris
ART NOUVEAU:
- developed at the beginning of the 20th century
- was built around the use of;
- simple natural forms
- curved lines, shapes of plants
- geometric forms based on Japanese art - was used in architecture, glass, fabrics
- Gustav Klint
- similar to the arts and crafts movement
- designers preferred to be called artists
- rejected industrial mass production
- only available to wealthy
