Social explanations
Sociological theories: Anomie, Durkheim. Labelling, Howard Becker. Control Theory, Travis Hirschi.
Social norms and values- norms shape behaviour by determining what is appropriate and acceptable behaviour. Values are beliefs which ground norms in culture.
Status/role defined by... gender, race, class, sexuality, age etc.
Emile Durkheim: 'The division of labour in society' (1983)- processes of social change. To expain the growth of crime & criminal behaviour-->
-such societies encourage unbridled 'egoism' that is against the maintenace of social solidarity and conformity of the law
