Evaluations of the positive/negative destinction in symptoms of Schizophrenia

Negatives

- Important for research?

Claridge and Davis found that although popularly used, the distinction is not useful to whoever is being assessed.

Also unreliable as someone may only have 1 set of symptoms leading to a different diagnosis. This means they will not recieve the correct treatment and may get worse.

- Type or end state?

It is likely that positive and negative symptoms simply represent alternative states of Sz, rather than different types. In other words, one symptom progresses into another, rather than different symptoms indicating different types of Sz.

- Are symptoms exclusive?
