When G, whose employer, S, allowed travel concessions to employees' spouses and persons of the opposite sex with whom employees had been in a meaningful relationship for at least two years, brought a complaint before an industrial tribunal in respect of S's refusal to grant concessions for her female partner, the tribunal made a reference to the ECJ for a preliminary ruling on whether the refusal amounted to discrimination in breach of the Treaty of Rome 1957 Art.119 and Council Directive 75/117.
