Festivals in the ancient world- basically they didn't have a calendar but they got more days off than us!!

the great panathenaia- only athenians and 'resident foreigners' could take place in this super-athenian athenian festival for athena. it was yearly, but every 4 years they'd have a really big, 8-day long celebration.

programme of events: (we'll go into detail for every single one- lucky you!)

1- rhapsodic and musical contests

2- boys' and youths' athletics

3- mens' athletics

4- equestrian events

5- tribal contests

6- all-night celebration, procession and sacrifice

7- apobates and boat races

8- prize-giving

rhapsodic and musical contests- the illiad and odyssey would be memorised and recited, and there would be firstly singing accompanied by an aulos, then soloists playing the aulos, then singers with a kithara and then soloists on the kithara. pretend you know what aulos and kitharas mean.
