Unit 1.2- how do people change and manage the land?

• what is land degradation?

• land degradation can be categorised into three factors:

1. economic- people’s needs and unlimited wants cause them to practice agriculture which is the growing of crops and rearing of animals (arable and pastoral farming)

2. agriculture involves tilling/ cultivation of land to grow crops/ cereals/ vegetables/ fruits.

3. mining without land rehabilitation degrades the land to open dangerous pits harmful to fauna.

political factors of land degradation

• development of cities and towns for settlement can lead to degradation of land. (urban sprawl)

• the development of industries and factories can result in mismanagement of waste disposal.
