Chapter 1 - Summary (Present)
Francis describes his injuries sustained whilst he was a soldier (severe facial injuries)
He came to lodge with Mrs Belander in Frenchtown where he used to live as a young boy
Visits church and says prayers for important people in his life - Mum and dad, which we find out are dead and Nicole Renard and Larry LaSalle
Francis has a silver star medal - refuses to believe he is a hero
Reveals his love for Nicole
Chapter 2 - Summary (Present)
Francis reminisces about meeting Nicole for the first time
Desperation to talk to Nicole
Description of his childhood in Frenchtown
Chapter 3 - Summary (Present, Past, Present)
Present -
Francis disguises himself to walk through the town
He fears recognition
Past -
In a flashback, he recalls discussing Nicole with a soldier from Frenchtown
Present -
Francis is told that Nicole's family left sometime before - Could something have happened to make them leave
Back in his lodging, Francis talks with Mr Belander who feels sorry for his injuries
He dreams of his wartime experiences, describing them in graphic detail
Chapter 4 - Summary (Present)
The wreck centre is introduced - this is a key place in the novel and his childhood
Francis meets Arthur Rivier who buys him a drink - drinking to forget the memories of war because it was so tragic
Francis and Arthur reminisce about their school days - Good memories - taking their minds off the war
He heads for the wreck centre, although he said he wouldn't go there
Chapter 5 - (Present, Past, Present)
Francis describes that the wreck centre - it is boarded up and run down
Past -
He recalls the tragic story that caused the centre to be closed down before Larry started activities for the local children of Frenchtown - Why did he want to run activities for the children? Could this foreshadow the ****? [find quotes to support this]
