How is personality measured?

Eyesnck believed that there are different personality types, this is described as a type theory. There are different traits associated with these personality types which are;

• Extroversion- look to the outside world and other people for entertainment.
• Introversion- content with their own thoughts and ideas.
• Neuroticism- anxious and irritable.

An investigation by Eyesnck was to investigate the personality differences between people. He did this by giving 700 servicemen a questionnaire. Analysing the results he found 2 dimensions of personality; extroversion-introversion and neuroticism-stability. He then concluded that everyone can be placed along these 2 dimensions but most people lie in the middle of the scale.
