From 1067-1071, a series of revolts against England posed a great threat to his fragile government. 

HOW DID WILLIAM DEAL WITH THE REBELLIONS???

-Left England under the care of WILLIAM FITZOSBERN & ODO OF BAYEUX.

5 Dates to remember; 1067 (x2), 1068 (x2), 1069 (x2), 1070-71 (x1), 1075 (x1). 8 ALL TOGETHER.

1. THE WELSH BORDER. 1067. 

EADRIC THE WILD raised a revolt in Hertfordshire due to lost lands, & encouraged Welsh princes to join him. 

OUTCOME: They didn't manage to take control of the border, so made peace with William and retired to Wales with much booty.

2. KENT. 1067.

-1st main rebellion; Eustace of Bologne cross over not getting kent as a earldom, and Kentish rebels (over odo of bayeux's oppresive rule)

OUTCOME: rebellions were repulsed, and Eustace fled abroad. 

3. EXETER. 1068.

Harolds illegitimate sons came over from Ireland, and rebelled in co-ordination with Harold's mother Gytha.

OUTCOME: Eadnoth the Staller (AS) put down the rebellion. Gytha fled to Flanders. WC built and garrisoned (guarded) castle. WC went to Cornwall as show of strength. 

4. YORK. 1068.

-Edwine & Morcar. CANMORE SENT AID. 

OUTCOME: William built a castle. 

5. WELSH BORDER. 1069.

-Eadric the Wild

OUTCOME: Put down by William FitzOsbern. 

6. SOUTH WEST. 1069.

-Harold's illegitimate sons again. Exeter remained loyal, Dorset & Somerset also got involved. 

OUTCOME:  Suppressed by 2 chief Norman
