Ionisation cause cell in living tissue to mutate usually causing cancer. Radiation will ionise atoms in living cell - this can damage them and cause cancer. An atom contains a central nucleus containing protons and neutrons. Around this are electrons. When radiation is absorbed, living cells are damaged. Atom in the molecules become ionised and these ions can cause cancer. Ionisation happen when electrons are knocked out of atoms and molecules neutral atom become charge. Alpha radiation is most damaging inside the body. Beta and gamma radiation are most damaging outside the body.…
