- The iron produced from a blast furnance only contains 96% iron and is called pig iron.
- Carbon is an impurity which is present in the pig iron.
- This makes pig iron brittle and hard.
- Removing the carbon makes the iron too soft for many uses as pure iron has a regular arrangement of atoms which can easily slide over each other.
