Functionalism

• as a theory it dates back to the ideas of Emile Durkheim in the 1800s 
• suggests that society is like a body 
  • just like a body has different organs (brain, heart, kidneys, etc) a society has different institutions (police, school, government, etc)
  • everyone has a role to play in society just like organs all have a job in the body
