building materials
limestone is heated with clay to make cement. cement is mixed with sand to make mortar. mortar is mixed with sand and aggregate to make concrete.
limestone: widely available, cheaper than granite/marble, easy rock to cut, more hardwearing than marble, doesn't rot when it gets wet. can't be gnawed away by insects/rodents. fire-resistant.
concrete: doesn't rot when it gets wet, can't be gnawed by insects/rodents, fire-resistant, doesn't corrode, stronger when reinforced with steel bars
cement: can't be gnawed by insects/rodents, fire resistant, doesn't rot when wet
calcium carbonate
- limestone is made up of mainly calcium carbonate (CaCO3)
- can be decomposed by heating (thermal decomposition) to make calcium oxide and carbon dioxide
- - magnesium, copper, zinc, calcium and…
