What is lithotripsy?

a medical procedure that treats types of kidney stones, and stones in other organs i.e. the liver 

  • kidney stones - occur when minerals in the blood crystilise in the kidneys and form solid masses (stones) - may consist of small, sharp-edged crystals - usually exit during urination 
  • sometimes the body cannot pass larger stones through urination - this can lead to kidney damage, and the patient may experience bleeding, pain or UTI's - therefore, a doctor may suggest lithotripsy
