Born in Atlanta, Georgia on 15th January 1929. He graduated from Morehouse College in 1948. He then entered the ministry. He heard a speach from Gandhi, and was overwhelmed with effectiveness of the non violent actions taken in order to successfully campaign against British rule in India. King became pastor of the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama. In Montgomery, like most towns in the Deep South buses were segregated. Om 1st december, 1955, Rosa Parks was arrested for refusing to give up her seat on a segregated bus for a white person. After her arrest, King and his friends, Ralph David Abernathy, Edgar Nixon and Bayard Rustin helped organise the Mongomery bus boycott. King was arrested and his house was fire-bombed. Others also involved in the protest against bus segregation also recieved harassment and intimidation. For 13 months 17000 black people in Montgomery walked or obtained lifts from the small car owning black population of Montgomery. The loss of revenue was too much for the bus company to handle, and a decision by the supreme court forced the Montgomery Bus Company to accept integration. King also…
