Milgram's Study (1963)
A study into why, in WW2, so many obeyed the order of authority.
They advertised for 40 participants, the study being introduced as an investigation into learning. In every situation, the participants were always the 'teacher', while 'Mr Wallace' was the learner. They saw 'Mr Wallace' get strapped to an 'electric chair' and were then told to shock him if he answered a question incorrectly, each time increasing the number of volts. The experimenter was in the room with the participant and urged them to continue by saying that they had no choice.
