The growth of hospitals

• Thomas Coram opens the Foundling hospital to provide care for abandoned children 
• He spent over ten years collecting and raising money for it
• Many were educated there until the age of fiften, many being trained for military or domestic service

Voluntary hospitals

• In the early eighteenth century, many hospitals began to appear- mainly funded by inheritance and private subscription 
• Implemented new ways to treat the sick 
• Nurses were unskilled and untrained
