Henry VII (1485-1509)
- Lovel
plotted to raise troops, in order to kill the King. sought to overthrow Henry VIII, Henry VII had spies on lock..then tried overthrowing Henry VII..failed.
not dangerous, failed & fled, lack of support from retainers..Conyers suspected of involvement lost stewardship and fined. Those securing sanctuary also fined. Henry denied use of sanctuary and Pope didnt object.
- Stafford
Humphrey and Thomas Stafford eluded capture and took sanctuary in Colchester Abbey..fled to Worcester, escaped again but captured in Oxfordshire. Humphrey executed.
- Simnel - irish
plotted to remove Henry VII and replace with Yorkist King. Henry VII had weak claim to throne; he was Lancastrian and defeated Yorkist.. aimed to join two by marrying Elizabeth of York. many Yorkists lost land as a result of support for Richard III..he allowed Irish to rule themselves, worried Henry may change that..
dangerous 'cause throne changed 3 times in 3 years.. but not dangerous 'cause had no support from english who disliked irish
- Yorkshire
object to paying for a war that didnt concern them. traditionally, people of South funded wars in France, whilst north - scotland. Counties of Northumberland, Westmoreland and Cumberland exempt on grounds of poverty - Yorkshire felt unfair..had been effected by bad harvests.
dangerous cause required royal force to put rebellion down. Successful as Henry didnt collect taxes from them..dangerous cause killed member of nobility..but not dangerous cause far from london and put down easily.
- Cornish
taxation cause. people of Cornwall did not see events in the North as being a threat to them, and did not want to pay for a war that was none of their business. They persuaded by a lawyer, Thomas Flamank, to direct their resentment at Henry’s ‘evil advisers’..marched to London, 15,000 strong, brushing aside Daubeny’s royal force of 500 men at Guilford. Henry had been caught unawares, as he had been concentrating on Scotland. The rebels camped at Blackheath outside London, but began to lose heart when men of Kent did not rise with them, and when the King did not negotiate with them. executed, fined.
not dangerous, gained sympathy but not much support out of Cornwall & no aristocratic leadership. Henry didnt ask for as much money again, but didnt need to.
- Warbeck
claim to throne by impersonating..support from Ireland and France who wanted to stop Henry helping Brittany. also supported by Margaret of Burgundy, Holy Roman Emperor and James of Scotland.
dangerous: had support from all of Henry's enemies & the real person dead.. but not dangerous cause no support in England..Warbeck himself not determined..Henrys navy disrupted efforts. no big changes in government as a result of this rebellion.
Henry VIII (1509-47)
- Amicable Grant
against non-parliamentary taxes. Wolsey already took £260k in forced loans - didnt pay back..Church been taxed excessively.. tax assessment rates too high.. lots of rebels, more than retainers.. sympathy from members of the King’s council e.g. royal councillors and the Archbishop of Canterbury.
dangerous cause larger than royal…
