OEDIPUS THE KING - EPISODE THREE AND STASIMON THREE

WHAT HAPPENS

- Characters in this episode: Jocasta, Messenger from Corinth, Chorus and Oedipus

- A messenger comes to the palace while Jocasta is praying = tells Jocasta that Polybus is dead = she disputes prophecy, and therefore the power of the gods, again. 

- The messenger tells Oedipus - Oedipus disputes prophecy as he believes he has escaped it but still doesn't understand the part of the prophecy concerning marrying his mother. 

- Jocasta also tells him not worry about that part, insisting that many a man before him has dreamed of sharing his mother's bed and to live for now.

- The messenger informs Oedipus that Merope and Polybus are not his blood parents - he knows this as he was the shepherd that passed baby Oedipus on to them from the other shepherd and the manner in which he found him.
