"Bach"ground Information

1685-1750.

Bach came from a north-German family that had a long history of producing musicians. During the period spanning the 16th to 19th centuries, more than 70 members of the Bach family were active organists, choirmasters and composers. Bach's own sons continued this tradition.

In 1723, Bach left his job at the court in Cohen to become Director of Music at St. Thomas's Church in Leipzig. The workload was immense as he had to compose and prepare for performance considerable quantities of new music for Sundays and main church festivals.

J.S. Bach also composed much educational music for his family and pupils, such as the Inventions and the Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach- both of which are still used by piano teachers today,
