States of Matter
- There are three states of matter - solid liquid and gas.
- All materials are made up of particles
- State depens on how strong the particles stick together (attraction)
- This depends on the material, temperature and pressure
Particle Theory
Particles in a Solid:
- strong forces of attraction between particles
- particles held closely in fixed positions in regular arrangement
- particles vibrate
- particles don't move - definite shape and volume
- not easily compressed
- usually dense
Particles in a Liquid:
- some forces of attraction between particles
- particles can move past each other but stick together
- doesn't have a definite shape
- keep the same volume
- not easily compressed
- quite dense
