CHEMISTRY C7 REVISION: The Haber Process
Introduction:
The Haber Process is used to produce ammonia which can then be used to make
fertilisers, explosives and medecines etc.
It is a reversible reaction that produces ammonia from nitrogen (N2) and Hydrogen (H2)
This is the chemical equation:
N2(g) + 3H2 (g) ⇌ 2NH3 (g)
How the process works:
1) Nitrogen and Hydrogen from the atmosphere are heated up at a temperature of 450 degrees(C), with an iron catalyst and with a pressure of about 200 atmospheres (atm) which means that it is 200 times normal pressure. These are the conditions needed for nitrogen and hydrogen to be able to react.
Just remeber:
- HIGH temperature
- HIGH pressure
- A iron catalyst
2) This reaction produces Ammonia which has a chemical formula of NH3.
BUT WAIT
Nitrogen with a formula of N2 and…
