Russia's super power status

It can be argued that Russia became a super power following the Second World War concerning its geographical influence, economy and military might.
Firstly, a major reason that Russia became a super power after the war was because of the sphere of influence it had gained in Eastern Europe in countries such as East Germany, Poland and Bulgaria. These states were crucial is allowing Russia to become a super power for two main reasons. Firstly, they were not fully independent which allowed Russia to control them and it also acted as a buffer zone against its capitalist enemies of the West. Thus this sphere of influence allowed Russia to become a super power as now Russia had full cooperation from communist leaders in Eastern Europe in the name of security against the common enemy, giving Russia more strength as these countries would fight alongside Russia in any future conflicts.
