Situation Ethics

Joseph Fletcher, in his book Situation Ethics, advocated a new approach to Christian ethics and moral decision-making which promoted a compromise between legalism and antinomianism

• The approach was a theological way of meeting a practical need in light of the radical changes of the 20th century
• Situation Ethics found a niche in the growing dissatisfaction of religious followers with the inflexible nature of tradition

Fletcher's main argument proposes the idea that the moral principles held by the Church  cannot be used as moral absolutes because they are problematic and do not work in real situations where ethical decisions need to be made
