Discuss how far sociologists would agree that parental attitudes are the most important influence on a child's educational achievement.
Educational achievement is the performance a student attains in education.
Some sociologists would agree that parental attitudes are the most important influence on a child’s educational achievement. However other sociologists disagree and believe that there are other factors that contribute to a child’s educational achievement. In this essay I will discuss how far sociologists would agree that parental attitudes are the most important influence on a child’s educational achievement.
On the one hand it could be argued that parental attitudes are the most important influence on a child’s educational achievement.
For example, different parents have different attitudes towards education.
A parent who highly values education would be more likely to pass on their positive view of education to their child re-enforcing them to do well in education. However a parent with a negative attitude towards education or doesn't value it as much may influence their child to carry the same views.
Also a child who has a parent with a successful career may feel the need to follow in their parents' footsteps by also achieving well in education thus having a successful career.
