STROKE = when the blood supply to the brain is cut off/interruped/blocked
ISCHAEMIC = most common, can occur when a blood clot blocks the flow of blood and oxygen to the brain.
- aging
- high blood pressure
- obesity
- high cholesterol levels
- diabetes
- excessive alcohol intake
HAEMORRHAGIC STROKES = less common, can occur when blood vessels within the skull burst and bleeds into and around the brain.
- being overweight and obese
- drinking an excessive amount of alcohol
- smoking
- lack of excercise
- stress, which may cause temporary rise in blood pressure
CAUSE
- a blood clot forms in a main artery to the brain/ blood clot stops the flow of blood to the brain
- a blood clot/ air bubble/ fat globule forms in a blood vessel and is carried to the brain
- blood vessel bursts inside the brain
- blood vessel on the surface of the brain bleeding into the area between the brain and the skull
SYMPTOMS
Face drooping
Arm weakness
Speech difficulty
Time to call 911
FACE
- may have dropped to one side
- may unable to smile (either fully or one side)
- sudden loss of vision/blurred vision
- A sudden headache and stiffness of neck
ARMS
- may be unable to lift one or both arms and keep them there
SPEECH
- slurred/garbles
- unable to talk
other:
- complete paralysis of one side of the body
- problems with coordination and balance
- confusion
