THE HEART
FUNCTION OF THE HEART
Double pump = Blood enters the two atria simultaneously and once full, contract and push blood into the ventricles through the tricuspid and bicuspid valves
- This blood leaves the heart through either the semi-lunar valves and the pulmonary vein and aorta
Diastolic rate = when the ventricles are relaxing and the atria are filling
Systolic rate = when the ventricles are contracting
The cardiac cycle = the co-ordinated flow of blood through the heart
- Takes place on average 70 times a minute
FLOW OF BLOOD
- Blood enters the two atria
- The blood flows downwards into the two ventricles
- As the ventricles contract, the blood is forced out of the heart
- Left pumping out through the aorta then around the body
- Right to the lungs to deposit carbon dioxide…
