What is the Mass Media?
The mass media are forms of communication that reach a mass audience. They can be divided into three categories: press, broadcasting and eletronic media. You have traditional and new media.
Traditional media includes:
- newspapers
- magazines
- books
- television
- radio
- cinema
New media includes:
- the internet
- mobile phones
- digital radio
- cable and satellite TV
- DVDs
- video games
Quality Broadsheets: The Guardian, the Daily Telegraph and the Times. Tend to be read by the higher classes.
Middle-market tabloids: Daily mail, and Daily Express
Mass-market tabloids: (also known as 'red tops') the Sun and the Mirror.
Broadcasting (TV and radio) may be funded publicly and privately. The internet became available in the 1990s and hosts the World Wide Web and e-mail.
Newspaper readership: sociologists study how much media we consume. There has been a decline in the readership of popuar newspapers in the last 25 years.
