WILLIAM WORDSWORTH
born in Cumberland, England in 1770
his early life was depressing, troubled relationship with his father and a difficult relationship with his grandparents and uncle on his mothers side.
Both of his parents died in his early teens, and he was seperated from his siblings - it was 9 years before he saw his sister again.
He had to live with his grandparents, he considered committing suicide. He spent most of his time outdoors with nature, and he loved nature.
Early supporter of the French Revoution.
Romantic poet - later in his life made poet laureate.
CONTEXT OF THE POEM
The Prelude is the first part of a 3 part poem. He began writing when he was 28, and continued writing for the rest of his life - he only managed to finish 2 parts and his wife published the poem after his death.
The theme, described by Wordsworth describes man, nature and society.
Genre - romanticism - a dislike of urban life, a love of the supernatural, use of colloquial language - can be compared to 'Ozymandias' in this sense.
Poem takes place at the Lake District.
Tells the story of Wordsworth as a young boy, stealing a boat. He rows out onto the lake. Starts happy but he then sees a large mountain which springs into view - he becomes terrified and goes back to shore. The memory tarnishes him afterwards.
FORM - Epic Poetry
Epic poetry means a long narrative poem which tells of heroic actions, usually legendary or historical, and focuses on one hero character.
The Prelude is influenced by 'paridise lost'.
