The Renal System
Function:
- Urine production
- Osmoregulation
Dysfunction:
- Renal Failure – when the kidneys fail and urine output stops. Can be life threatening because blood is overloaded with waste e.g. urea.
Causes:
- Obstruction
- Shock
- Injury
- Illness
- Pancreatitis
- Tumours
- Hypertension
- Diabetes
- Drugs
Diagnosis:
- GP
- Blood tests
- Urine tests to check kidney function
- Dipsticks – show presence of sugar, protein or blood in urine.
- X ray – can show lack of function
- Urography – injection of dye then x-ray to show function
