1. In 1961, President Kennedy authorised a CIA-trained invasion of Cuba by rebels.

2. In April 1961, the rebels landed in the Bay of Pigs, but the USA didn't give them air support as they had promised. They were easily defeated.

3. The invasion meant Castro decided that Cuba needed Soviet military assistance.
